Welcome to the UKS2 class page!

Welcome to the Upper Key Stage 2 webpage. The class teachers in UKS2 are Mrs Francis, Mrs Dikkez, Mr Murfin and Mr Westerman. Mrs Dawson also teaches Y6F on Monday. Our UKS2 teaching assistants are Mrs Duckmanton and Mrs Lowther.

Below you will find further information about our class routines and our learning.

Our Learning

Our Curriculum theme for the Lent term at Holy Trinity is: Lives & Community.

We will be using a range of wonderful books in our work this term, including: Rain Player by David Wisniewski, Moth by Isabel Thomas and Under Earth, Under Water by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielinski. We will also be reading the wonderful story The Beast and the Bethany by the incredible author, Jack Meggitt-Philips as our class novel this term.

In History this term we will be investigating the question, ‘Who were the Mayans?’  We will look at where they lived, what they did and how the became king of their city-states. We will also be looking at how they believed in over 30 gods!

Our Science work will be based on human geography (rocks and minerals) and evolution and adaptation. We will be creating our own hypotheses, collecting useful data based on our studies and analysing the results we find to reach a scientific conclusion.

In our Art sessions we will be using our printing skills and making links to our Maya topic looking at face masks and inscriptions.

We will continue to have our Music lessons each week learning how to play a tuned instrument and performing this to an audience.

Finally, in Computing we will be reminding ourselves of the uses of technology within our lives and use this to record and publish results.

Our Routines

In UKS2 this year, National Curriculum & RWI spellings will be given out each week on Monday. These spellings should be learnt at home and then the children will be tested on them the following week.

Reading is also an incredibly important skill and is relevant across all subjects within school. Regular practice really does make a huge difference to both of these, as does talking about what has been read with someone at home too. Please try to ensure your child reads at home for at least 15 minutes each night and gets their home/school diary signed at least three times per week to indicate that this has happened. Reading Diaries will be collected in each Monday to check this is happening. Reading can also be logged on Class Dojo as a message or through the portfolio section.

Practicing times tables is a vital life skill that will help in all areas of your child’s Maths work. It is important that all children are confident and quick when recalling them. All children have access to the Times Tables Rockstar online platform, which is a great way to practice and develop confidence and recall of the various times tables facts. Children’s login details for this can be found in their reading diary, or contact your child’s class teacher for further support.

PE will take place on Monday and Tuesday in UKS2. On PE days, your child should attend school wearing their full PE kit. It is expected that your child will have the appropriate PE kit for these days in order to access the sessions appropriately. The correct PE kit consists of: a plain white t-shirt, red, black or navy shorts and trainers. A plain tracksuit can also be worn, especially when the weather is colder.
